Geometry has long appealed to the human eye. From the linear bands and meander patterns of Ancient Greece to the Mondrian-inspired colour blocks of today, geometric style remains one of the most popular approaches to design.
This may be due to the sense of balance it often offers. Shapes are balanced against other shapes, clean lines establish clear sections. Geometric style can be fairly simple, yet it typically remains approachable – and thus, always has impact.
This makes it a fantastic option for rug design. Today, we’ll go over the potential and possibilities of geometric rug design, and even help you figure out how to incorporate geometric area rugs into your space.
Types of Geometric Patterns in Rugs and Interior Design
There are many types of design found in geometric pattern rugs. Covering all of them would require a whole book!
So, we’ll simplify by breaking them up into broad categories:
- Classic geometric designs - These cover a lot of the geometric patterns that repeat in an obviously predictable manner. Examples include repeating chevrons, stripes, herringbones, and lattices.
- Modern geometric designs - Modern designs may introduce more complexity than classic ones, although it varies as there are minimalist interpretations too. What’s more, this also comes with the subtype of abstract geometric designs. This particular subtype is less obviously predictable in pattern, but often still has an underlying “formula” as to the arrangement or repetition of shapes. Examples include Composition by Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Suprematism by Kasimir Malevich.
At The Rug Maker, we’ve actually created rugs of both types. Our Adamant rug from the Into the Rabbit Hole Collection is closer to the classic styles, for instance, while several of the pieces from our Corak Collection are influenced by modern geometrics.
How to Choose and Use Geometric Rugs for Your Space
So, how do you pick a geometric rug and position it properly?
First, the same principles for all rugs apply: your rug should be capable of unifying a room’s different elements and focusing attention. In most cases, it should also serve as an anchoring point for the furnishings around it.
Where geometric rugs are concerned, you can distil those ideas into several tips:
- Choose patterns that harmonise with your room’s dimensions. Geometric shapes establish sections and in some cases, can be strong enough to give an impression of “occupying” a space in more than one dimension. If you have a small room and furniture with a lot of patterns, avoid rugs that are the same. It can overwhelm the space.
- Consider direction. The hard-line shapes of geometric design can sometimes imbue a geometric pattern rug with directionality. A chevron rug may seem to point at something, for instance, and the same goes for a herringbone. Think about where the pattern leads or points and use that to highlight a decoration or passage!
- Use shapes to create illusions. Have a slightly narrow living room? Get a geometric area rug with long rectangles and set it so that the rectangles make it look wider. It’s like horizontal striping in clothing or wallpaper!

As you can see, adding a geometric rug to your home can help you update its looks and add new energy to it. A simple rug can even modernise a room that’s been crying out for a refresh!
That being said, it’s all too easy to go wrong when choosing a geometric rug. If you don’t have an innate sense for visual balance, for instance, you may well end up bringing down your room’s looks instead of improving them.
