How to Decorate a Room with a Statement Rug

Many people want to decorate their rooms with statement rugs. Something bold, eye-catching, and full of unique character.

Unfortunately, many people also don’t know how to pull this off. There can be a lot of different concerns when trying to make this happen.

You may get rugs and carpets that are too loud to make a statement elegantly, or ones that don’t match the furniture.

That’s why many homeowners prefer to play it safe with minimalist rugs in Singapore. Something simple on the plainer side. But going plain isn’t the way to make a statement, is it?

Today, we’ll try to make the task a little easier for you with some tips – read on to find out how to make everything from custom rugs to a quality hand tufted rug work while making a statement.

How Does a Statement Rug Make an Impact?

Statement rugs do their job by anchoring the space you put them in. They offer a strong focal point for the room’s visual structure and draw scattered design elements together.

They can also instantly inject personality into the area. Whether you choose one with floral, abstract, animal print, or tribal designs, your rug tells a story. This is even more true when you design your own rug!

Finally, a good statement rug defines mood and tone. Bright-coloured rugs energise a room. Earth-toned ones soften and ground it. Geometric-patterned ones modernise it.

And all of this happens while the rug also turns the functional into something beautiful –  a statement rug is art that you walk on.

That’s why you can even have a statement runner rug in some areas, or put similar rugs in a high traffic area. They still serve the classic purpose of a rug while adding more to the space.

Mind the Size

First, consider the size of the rug. If you don’t have the rug yet, consider the size of the room instead. A rug in the wrong size can only make a bad statement – you want something that fits in the space but doesn’t look swallowed up by it.

This part is actually easier if you’re not buying a rug but getting a custom one instead since most rug makers will expressly ask for the room’s size or your preferred size for your custom rug.

We do this for our clients, and in some cases even perform on-site evaluations of the room. This ensures the resulting statement rug is actually the right size for our client’s needs.

Why Incorrect Sizing Matters

Incorrect rug sizing is actually one of the most common mistakes we see homeowners make selecting a piece. They often go too small out of fear they might overpower the room.

But a rug that’s too small can also harm your living space. It can make the room feel disjointed, seem detached from the rest of your decor, or even disrupt the foot traffic or flow.

Getting the scale right is how you avoid that. Aim for something that gives your furniture or room layout a proper base. You may also want to use your rug to help define specific areas, especially if you have an open-concept living and dining area.

Tips for Getting the Right Rug Size

If you want advice on choosing the right rug size for your area, try these. We’ve split them up into which living space they’re best for.

For your living room:

  • Get a rug that covers the seating area.
  • If your sofa has legs, ensure that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs are on the rug, with about 20cm to 40cm of the rug going under the sofa.
  • The goal is to get a rug size that grounds the seating area.
  • Allow the rug to come out about 10cm on both sides of your sofa length for tight areas, or have it extend to the width of the side tables for larger rooms.
  • Leave about 30cm to 50cm of space from your console.

For your bedroom:

  • For queen-sized beds, go for a rug that extends at least 45 cm on each side.
  • For king-sized beds, go for a rug that extends about 45 to 60 cm on each side.
  • The goal is to offer a comfortable surface to step on while softening the space.
  • Consider narrow runners on either side of the bed if you can’t find a large rug.

For compact spaces like studio apartments:

  • Don’t be afraid to use a rug that fills a large portion of the floor space.
  • If using a big rug, the goal is to create the illusion of a bigger room

What if you’ve already bought a rug that turns out too small? Don’t panic: you can often fix this easily with a larger base rug. Simply layer the smaller piece on top of the larger one. Big neutral-coloured rugs are perfect for this – jute or cotton flat weave rugs, in particular.

The idea is to add dimension, coverage, texture, and scale. You can do this in many a living space and still get the effect of something designed to match.

Alternatively, you can use your small rug in any little nook where it would feel intentional, as a delineation of the space. Entryways, study desks, and reading nooks are perfect examples.

Take Cues from the Rug Colour and Pattern

Next, consider the colour and pattern of the rug – how can you complement it with other furnishings?

You can pull both the colour and pattern from the rug and decorate chairs with throw pillows of the same hues and patterns, for instance.

Note that you don’t need to repeat the exact pattern of your rug across the room. You can echo it subtly instead, whether it’s the colour or style, to create visual rhythm.

For example:

  • Pair a Moroccan rug with subtle lattice-patterned curtains
  • Have a bold floral rug with a soft, textured throw in a matching shade
  • Combine a modern abstract rug with minimalist, curved furniture lines

Alternatively, you can go the other way and let the rug be the only thing with a bold colour in the room. Try offsetting it with neutrals in the paintings, pillows, and throws.

We’ve seen people order a burgundy-hued wool carpet in Singapore for a room dominated by white and touches of black. It looked beautifully elegant, especially since all those neutrals made the carpet truly pop.

This can feel a little daring, as we know many Singaporean homeowners tend to avoid strong colours out of fear they’ll make spaces feel smaller. But the right use of colour can actually make a room feel more curated and visually dynamic. It can even make it larger!

Give a Thought to Durability

The thing about a statement rug is that it ceases to be a good statement once it’s become tattered. And if you put a fragile rug in a high-traffic room, that may well be the outcome!

The best statement rug for a bedroom usually isn’t the best statement rug for something like the dining area, for instance.

In the former, you likely only have to worry about bare or slippered feet. In the latter, you have to contend with chairs being pulled out, food spills, and more, which means using delicate silk rugs for the dining room would likely result in a disaster.

Instead, more durable custom woven rugs would be preferable. Otherwise, you’re probably looking at regular rug replacements!

What to Look for in Durable Rugs

Not sure what materials to look for when decorating with area rugs in Singapore? Here’s a quick guide

For materials:

  • Choose wool, nylon, or polypropylene for more durable materials.
  • Wool is often the top choice thanks to its strength, stain-resistance, and breathability.

For construction:

  • Use high quality and flat weave rugs like kilims or dhurries for high traffic areas.
  • Use hand-knotted rugs in moderate-traffic areas if you want more premium rugs.

For pile height:

  • Use low- to medium-pile rugs to minimise maintenance.
  • Keep high-pile or shag rugs to low-traffic areas.

Where to Place Your Rug to Maximise Its Lifespan

The simple rule is to place more durable rugs in higher-traffic areas and less durable ones in lower-traffic areas. In addition to that:

  • Put more stain-resistant rugs in higher-traffic areas.
  • Put darker-toned or busier-patterned rugs in higher-traffic areas.

These rugs are less likely to show grime or stains easily, which means they can go under sofas, dining tables, or even near entrances without looking grimy too fast.

That said, you should still try to get a professional cleaning for your rug regularly. Consider our services at The Rug Maker if you need a rug cleaning in Singapore.

Experiment and Be Brave

You may have to move or replace a lot of decor before you hit on the one that shows off your statement rug or carpet to full advantage.

That’s fine, because it happens to the pros too!

Don’t be afraid to experiment. For instance, don’t feel like everything has to match.

As we already pointed out, offsetting or complementary decor schemes can work as well as ones where matching is the organising logic.

Get a Custom Piece

This is probably one of the single best things you can do to figure out your decor.

Ask people who customise rugs take a look at your already-furnished space and see what carpet or rug designs they propose for it. This way, you can even skip most of the redecoration and will be getting something that’s made to fit the current decor instead.
